I’m a big girl now

Daddee got Domino’s Pizza delivered for lunch today (this was Sunday). With it was also an order of spaghetti.

Caitlin got her share of the spaghetti and got stuck into it. From what I can see she was quite happily digging into it from the start, eyes glued to the tv (we have failed in this respect of parenting in that our earlier habits of singledom of meals-infront-of-tv has now be passed onto the kids; where our fold-out pinewood tables from those days are now utilised more by Caitlin. TV, as you know, is an effective distraction tool..)

I went over to sit with her, a slice of extravaganza in hand.

Halfway into her spaghetti she looks to me and says, “Daddee, this is a bit hot…”

“Issit??” The Uh-oh’s running through my mind: Need to rush her a glass of water; replace the plate and offer her the pizza; Daddee has to be the food-disposal by consuming the left-over; the “local city-council waste management company”, if going by local vernacular..

“Ya, it’s a bit hot. But I can eat it- I’m a [nod] big girl [nod nod] now… It’s a bit hot but I’m a [nod] big [nod] girl [nod] now..”

She continues with her spaghetti, eyes back on the tv.

I can’t remember ever seeing her talk to me as matter-of-fact-ly as she did this afternoon. Straight faced, telling it the way it is.

Surprise, pride, admiration, nostalgia, sentimentalism, Please Don’t Grow So Quickly, I-wish-I-had-my-camera; all rolled into one.

There will reach many a point when your role as a daddy transforms. And this happens at each transformation stage of your little girl growing from a cocoon to a butterfly.

Help her fly, daddy. Help her fly way up high into the sky!

Then maybe cry a little…but don’t get too misty eyed to miss the many wonders your butterfly will perform!

Yes, they grow so fast indeed.

I think with Micah, he was a speedy baby, as in he reached certain milestones real fast, and so we hardly remember him being baby-ish.

But with Max we still love to cuddle him and savoring him being a toddler still, i.e. the way his lips move trying to say certain words, etc. Oh, so adorable!

But we look forward to them being more independent physically, yet coming back to us constantly because they know we are the ones they can trust and call for help in times of trouble (big and small).

Big girl indeed, developing a taste for the spicy genre now…Through my observation of Caitlin, she loves food and very easy to please when it comes to food. When I sat next to her during Hot Mummee’s birthday celebration and we had that delicious steamboat prepared by Grandma, she happily tucked into her food and just enjoyed her food without a complaint. Indeed a big girl and growing up fast…..I KNOW what you mean by thoughts of “Please don’t grow so quickly as I am enjoying the moment”
