Keeping the toddler / pre-schooler busy over the holidays

While I know schools here resumes on Jan 5 2009, and that Caitlin’s school year ends on Oct 25 2008 (I think!), I don’t know when her school term starts in 2009; I have a feeling they don’t have to follow the older kids’ school terms….

Even assuming that her school term does start along with the rest of the country: What can we do to keep her busy in those 2 months??

Of course, we will get her to revise / revisit her 2008′s school work and books, to keep them fresh in her head. But what new content should we consider for that time off school? And what about her daily routine, since it’s suddenly so free-for-all again? She can’t quite revert back to those of before-school, since daily routines starting this year includes her little brother, effectively changing a lot of things / creating extra preparations / stuff to pack into the car boot.

And let’s not forget Hot Mummee and Daddee; no, Daddee and Hot Mummee (cos I am not) are also still working fulltime..

I still have quite a few annual leave left for 2008; I could take days off (which I have already started planning) and chill with her. Or I could utilise the staff privilege and fly off somewhere- but where, what with our exchange rate the way it is?

Any ideas?

  1. Don’t know about the age limit and all that but what about some of the holiday camps ?

    Or maybe ask your parents/inlwas to take Caitline away for a country-side holiday a few days.

    Or maybe just get some good books, DVDs, science craft books, Lego to keep her occupied at granny’s during the day.

    Or maybe time to get crafty yourself anf try out the new kitchen set/doll house again?

    Or get her those paper dolls and then she can spend the whole day making them new clothes….you know what I am talking about (since you are a guy after all!)?

    Get granny to let her do some baking perhaps, if granny is up to the mess!

  2. psst hunny.. Officially school ends mid Nov (14/15th) this year. Not sure if that applies to them though. I know the kids kindy tend to follow the big kids really (Except the exam weeks they have off in primary/secondary). Next year 5th Jan k will start kindy. Js start school 2nd Jan (cos they are starting standard 1, need “orientation”). :)

    it is hard to keep all occupied! eeek.. :) we have to meet up lor!

  3. Thanks Ann,
    I like the baking idea most, somehow. Get her into some home-ec activities; I feel most kids should.

    Lia,
    Caitlin’s school’s message book (that’s how they communicate with parents) says “Concert and graduation” in late Oct (don’t wanna share the date on such public domain) Thus I assume that’s it for the year…. will clarify with the teachers, and also when they go back in 2009.

  4. I already ha a few things I want to do with my boys during the break, involving Gadget-daddy as much as possible:

    1. Go to the Elephant Sanctuary in Pahang (near Gentings);

    2. Make a visit to the seaside (Penang/PD/Melacca?);

    3. Weekly visit to the Science Center;

    4. Visit my Grandma in Taiping;

    5. Take a train ride to another town (Ipoh/Seremban) just for the experience of being on a train for a “long” journey;

    6. Meet up with other friends and their kids.

    Other stuff would be like hanging out at my mom’s, do some water-colour painting, make my own worksheets for them to have some exercise, go to the different parks, etc.

    I actually think it’ll be great to go to Camerons for a family holiday, but the journey itself is really a deterant. Hahaha…

    Eh…here is my 5 cents worth :-

    1) Been up to the Petronas Twin Tower bridge…quite a sight of
    the city; they have a schedule so you have to check
    2) Another high up in the city sight KL Tower
    3) Enrol her in an art & craft class (good one in Bangsar
    Village 1)
    4) Sunway Lagoon Water Park
    5) Music school and find out if she is musically inclined?
    6) Caitlin, Daddee and Hot Mummee at Club Med Cherating???

  6. Hmm good suggestions, ladies- thanks.

    Thing is, most of these require taking days off work….

    But they do look like worthwhile adventures…
