A movie, a show, a dip

How was my weekend, you ask?

It was actually quite an active one, now that I actually thought about it. It didn’t seem so during, maybe ‘cos it’s over, and that I started thinking about where it went….

Friday night we watched The Dark Knight. No disrespect for the dead, but I didn’t think Heath Ledger’s performance was anything extraordinary. I have seen Brad Pitt act just as whacko-ish in The 12 Monkeys. That’s not to say his performance was poor, just not what some think is worthy of an Oscar consideration. My opinion.

That said, The Dark Knight is a good movie. Over 2 hours of excitement that when you think the movie was coming to an end, it starts again. Ledger does make a good Joker. And when you think “Aw come on, what an obvious opening for a sequel”, it wasn’t. And it’s not all happy ever after either.

Then after the movie (my sister in law got the tickets) my older brother and his family started heading home; when Hot Mummee and I, suddenly free from all children-obligation, decided to stay on for another movie! Yes it was already midnight, but with the above reason, we had to exploit it a lot a lot!

The Mummy, to be honest, was quite a letdown. The first two were a lot better. Enough said.

I broke two promises to Caitlin this past weekend. On Friday, the night of the movies, I did tell her in the morning that we were going for a movie and that we’d come get her from Grandma’s after that, however late it was going to be. Hot Mummee called up during the day to arrange with Grandma to leave the kids behind for the night, and had had a chat with Caitlin telling her so. Somehow she got Caitlin to say yes! So, that was one promise I didn’t keep.

The other promise was that I’d bring her for a swim at the condo’s pool downstairs. I told her that I’d bring her on Saturday morning (I told her “tomorrow” on Friday; not that she knows her days of week yet). I guess she had a late night at Grandma’s, because Grandma only brought the gang over to the condo after 10am without breakfast milkies, which means that by the time all the mandatories were done, it was already too close to the midday peak sun.

So we stayed in during the day, much to her dismay; and got her to complete as much of her homework as possible, much to her even more dismay. Daddee however, didn’t stay home that much though.

You see, on Friday, boss scored some free tickets to this event, you see, and asked if anyone was interested. A colleague and I shared the available 5 tickets; with me taking 3. I shared it with my older brother and his 16 yr old daughter. I knew my brother- let’s call him WyLuxx, would be interested in this event mainly for trying out his photography skills; and my niece, well, because of what the event was.

The event was held at Genting Highlands, you see, and given that this was an international event we thought to leave KL a good 2 hours before the starting time, since we didn’t know what the traffic was going to be like, and parking may also be an issue upon arrival. The tickets also said that the event was going to start on time; presumably (and correctly so) due to it being broadcasted live on paid-tv.

Pleasantly surprised at the breeze (the traffic, not the clouds, yet) on the road leading up the hills. Upon arrival, we followed the signs “Arena of Stars”, and it pointed to where the outdoor theme park is. I wasn’t all that sure, so wound down the window to ask a guard that was standing around looking important. He pointed to the same direction. I asked where to park. He pointed in the direction opposite the venue. WyLuxx drove in, and found a spot 10 spaces from the entrance.

Parked, crossed the road, and whipped out the tickets. Queued, doors opened some 30 minutes before time. Went in, and found a good spot directly facing the stage. Then the organisers come and tells us (with about 50 others) that these seats were booked for “our clients”. Pissed, we moved to adjacent and still found seats that was still quite good.

Our tickets were actually those that allowed entry into the moshpit; which as you know, are only for standing. But being 9 years older than I, WyLuxx thought to hang on to our existing wristband-entries in case he can’t stand as long as the event!

In any case, he had his zoom lens.

These are what he snapped.

Opening act

Leona Lewis

And the award goes to...

Panic at the Disco

Here are the others, in case you want to see more…

For the record, I gotta say that there aren’t that many people who can perform well live (as opposed to studio recording). But that night, the notable acts were Leona Lewis, One Republic, The Script, Electrico (Singaporean band). They were all fantastic live. I was told that the former two’s performances on the recent American Idol was less than perfect, but I didn’t watch that…

The Script, to me, is a band worth watching out for in coming years. Danny’s vocals are fantastic- live, no less.

So after all that, I suddenly have no desire to share the story of my little dip in the pool with Caitlin on Sunday anymore….!

    Wow. What an eventful weekend.

I think the last time I ever really wanted to go for a concert was when I was in my early teens and wondered why those super starts never came to do a concert in Malaysia. Of course, at that time we would not have had the money to go as well.

    Yes, very nice shots indeed.

It’s good that more and more international acts are coming to Malaysia. I remember the big deal when Michael Jackson was set to perform in Singapore, and how many locals went down just to catch him…..
