As with all parents, we have to constantly and consciously think about the future and financial welfare of our kids, as well as that of our own beyond (hopefully satisfying) that parental commitment.
So, whatever we make, we save.
A few weeks ago, this Daddee had a windfall: It pays to participate in radio cash-competitions!
So what did Daddee do with the prizemoney? ![]()
Daddee could have:
- Bought a new camera. Daddee’s older brother was recently bitten by the photography bug, and have been really researching the whole photo scene. He’s recently also bought a Nikon D300, and was urging me on to also get a Nikon so that we can share lenses. Makes sense, but it wasn’t my time yet
I already have a pretty good Canon S5is to play with. His pics are already pretty good considering he’s only started photography this year.
- Bought a new DVD HD player burner. As these home appliances are getting cheaper and cheaper, and since I am also taking home videos as memories where I would need to eventually share them as DVD’s with folks (and also with myself too), I would have to eventually get one of my own. But then again there was a more pressing urge….
- Become fashionable. Umm, that’s just not me, anymore!
.
So what did Daddee do with the prizemoney?
Daddee bought a much drooled-over 15″ Apple Macbook Pro! Yes the one with the multi-touch. Heh heh!
So now I have joined the ranks of Gadget-Daddy and fellow dad Derek. We are after all, guys who like gadgets!
…. In actual fact, I was already a Mac user; I used to work at the university computer shop, which doubles as an Apple University Consortium during uni days in Australia. Since then I have been using the Mac, until OSX came out and also other financial commitments took priority. I am now actually learning how to use OSX!

Here’s Caitlin enjoying an episode of Sesame Street’s podcast….
Among the projects that Daddee is looking forward to doing are:
- Video editing. One of my complaints about home movies burned on DVD players / burners is that if you wanna know when the footage was taken, the camera usually displays the date and time in very ugly font at the bottom corner of the screen. Also, you cannot edit the subtitles of the DVD movie.
My plan is to author the home movies into a DVD movie that will have the dates as subtitle, so that I could, at the press of a (subtitle) button, I can switch on/off this detail.
- Archive all my photos. Gotta love iPhoto!I have already helped older brother compile his kids’ sports day photos into a photobook to be published into a coffee table book. Can’t wait to see the end product.
.
And other projects I come across later….. heh heh.
.
It feels good to finally win something! Never won anything before in my life…

Very cool! Congratulations on winning the contest and using the proceeds to get yourself a new laptop.
I’m still learning my new Macbook and find myself bouncing back to the PC for things I am more familiar with. I’ve yet to really play around with iPhoto or iMovie but will be doing that shortly.
I think you made a great choice, although a nice Nikon camera would be good too. I own a Nikon D40x and love it.

Thanks Derek!
Are you also running Windows on your machine? Since I already have a work-issued IBM laptop, I am in no hurry to try this out on the Macbook!
If you haven’t already found this, this is a good collection of freebies to start with.

I reckon I may be investing in a copy of Aperture soon.
Btw, my brother did also have a D40 (not the D40x) which he first bought. Sold it to upgrade; I was very tempted to buy it from him! I have always thought Canon makes good cams, but now I am not sure who’s better!
Oh you are a MAC user!
I always feel MAC users are in a category of their own! Outsiders will never understand.

I am not running Windows yet, as I have a Windows machine right here as well that I use. Thanks for sharing that resource of freebies, I want to give NeoOffice a try on the Mac.
I’m a big fan of the Canon cameras as well, although my personal preference has been Canon for the point-and-shoot and Nikon for the DSLR. But I don’t think a Canon DSLR would steer you wrong either.
