She is at the age where she can reach for things on the kitchen counter, strong enough to open bedroom doors, kitchen cabinets, the fridge.
She’d steal peeks at her Daddee in the shower, help Daddee squeeze the toothpaste tube
She is also of the age now where she will be able to answer questions about or report on the status and whereabouts of things, mostly.
“DADDEE! Caleb vomitted!!” And the whole block knows about it too.
During the mornings when I am sending her to mum inlaw’s, I have been packing some snacks for her to munch on during the car ride. Lately it’s been buns (potato bread) that I have picked up from bakeries, or just a slice of her favourite Gardenia raisin bread. These are just to fill her stomach with at least something, having just woken up not too long before.
For these I have been packing them into this particular tupperware. Yesterday morning I couldn’t find the one I have been using. I remembered the night before when I was clearing out my junk from the bag from the car, Caitlin was playing with that tupperware, picking it up from the countertop and sliding it around. I was busy washing some dishes.
So in the car ride this morning I asked her. “Caitlin, do you remember that green box Daddee uses to keep the bread?” I was half expecting her to go Hmm? as she would with things ambiguous.
“Hmm?”
“That green box that you were playing with last night, that Daddee uses to put the bread in… Where did you put it?”
“Oh! That! It’s in the fridge….” said Caitlin, unflinchingly, matter of factly.
“In the fridge?? Why did you put an empty box in the fridge?” But I already know the answer.
It’s because she can.
