What else did Caitlin get for Christmas?

January 19th, 2008 · 6 Comments · A father's POV, Ergonomics

I promised a follow-up on what else Caitlin got for Christmas. You will excuse me for getting sidetracked due to the arrival of her younger brother Caleb :)

So here it is :)

Chilling out at Hyde Park while the world was on last minute Christmas eve rush…
Spotted the Christmas pressie?
So I’ve mentioned that we prefer to get Caitlin toys that at least contain some form of educational values.
From her recent birthday she’s received a jigsaw puzzle that, at times, have kept her quite happily occupied for some time. I have secretly watched play & her piece them together before, & she does enjoy the achievement of completing it on her own.
So, you guessed it, I bought her another similar jigsaw toy. Okay this Daddee isn’t very original sometimes, and would prefer to play it safe mostly!

This one is rather unique though.

First, the size of it already excited even this Daddee. It’s not overly big, but it is does require stretching across the floor to lay it out.

But the most interesting feature of this puzzle is the 3D aspect of it. There are pieces that slot together at 90 degrees, effectively building structures that then sit on pre-cut slots on the flat “playground”. These are the expected structures of the merry-go-around as Caitlin calls it, ferris wheel, hotdog stands, and figurines of kids doing stuff on the park.

After assembly Daddee & Caitlin would pretend we were actually in the park / fairground & walk along the path & visit the stalls, etc :)

Hey, thanks for stopping by and commenting. I’m really impressed by the design and tone of your blog. Since I’ve started A Good Husband I’ve discovered a cornucopia of really talented Daddy bloggers. It’s great! I never thought there were so many men willing to tackle the subject of fatherhood.

Now, if only there were more men willing to talk straight up about relationships. :)

    Wow! Lovely puzzle!

It’s only for this Mommy to dream of doing such stuff with her kids. My boys would probably run their toy cars and trains through the funfair and crash through everything in delight, then demand that Mommy det them up again so that they can crash test their cars again. Sigh… Boys will be boys I guess…

    Maybe…if we have a girl next…. ;)

Well, we now have a boy.

Some(construction-deconstruction)thing to look forward to I am sure!

For Christmas this year I was able to witness some real DIY-ing for children as displayed by a good friend of mine who made an “oven / stove” for his 3-year old. He made it out cardboard boxes, CDs and various other bits and pieces that he found in the house. What a great idea to use some of this stuff to actually MAKE a present – recycling at its best.

Tomas absolutely loves his present, “made by dad” and can be seen cooking up all sorts of exciting dishes in his new oven. I think it’s a great example of making something out of nothing with a little inspiration. Also it goes to show that kids don’t necessary look at toys the same way we do.

If you want to recreate this particular master piece of DIYing you just need:
    * a reasonably big card board box
    * some old CD’s (or anything by “The Hoff” or “Engelbert”)
    * drink caps
    * and a few metal screws and nuts … read more

Wow, That is a really cool puzzle.

Thanks for coming by. Your header is awesome, I never would have guessed that you stretched the background. When my husband and I were coming up with ideas for my header over dinner and a bottle of wine, I mentioned your header. I love the candle and evidence of a finished dinner.
