Baby is naturally exfoliating..

I don’t recall Caitlin having to go through this….

cal_foot_peel.jpg

But I think that is because Mummee’s water had broken so many hours before Caleb was actually born, thus somewhat drying out his skin in that time.

You can see it on his hands too, in the previous post. He’s got it up his arms, and on his face, peeling away outwards from his nose.

It looks somewhat gross and painful, like a sunburnt-peel; but I don’t think it hurts. In fact I think it’s for the good, cos Caleb’s skin is looking less dry underneath.

Daddee is resisting the urge to peel…. Heh.

~~~~~~~~ Update ~~~~~~~~~
In trying to self-educate, I googled “dry birth on baby skin”. After having previously found out that there is no such thing as “dry birth”, I still used the term anyway, and found the following URL.
Okay so I have learned that Mummee’s water breaking so many hours ago does not necessarily mean that baby’s environs is starting to dry out inside. But I still haven’t found the reason for the peeling though..
Like I said, I don’t recall Caitlin having peeling-skin in her first week on earth…
~~~~~~~~ Update 2 ~~~~~~~~~

A friend’s just taught me this word: Vernix

A quick search on Google on Daddee’s newly-learned word found the following 2 results, among others:

Medicinenet.com’s definition:

Vernix: More formally known as vernix caseosa, the vernix is a white cheesy substance that covers and protects the skin of the fetus and is still all over the skin of a baby at birth. Vernix is composed of sebum (the oil of the skin) and cells that have sloughed off the fetus’ skin.

“Vernix” is the Latin word for “varnish.” The vernix varnishes the baby. (“Caseosa” is “cheese” in Latin.)

A the following excerpt from Newborn Baby`s Appearance

Peeling skin:
Skin seems to be peeling off form the body particularly at the wrists, hands, ankles, and feet. Overdue babies seem to peel more than term babies. This is normal and no treatment is necessary.

Vernix caseosa:
This white creamy substance, which protected your baby`s skin before birth, seems to be present in skin creases even after bathing. The vernix need not be removed forcefully. Gently rub it into the creases and folds of your baby`s body.

    I want to peel the dead skin away so badly. That must be hard to resist.

    Thanks for your comment. You are definitely Semi-Super and will graduate to full Super once you have an outing with both kids and no Mama.
    Just that you would brave long flights with a small child proves it. I am sure you will do the same with both kids because you have no fear.
    They smell fear.
    And capitalize on it.

    heh…someone told me about this when I was still preggie.

    They say that when the dry skin peels away (NATURALLY, mind you!!) your baby’s skin will be smoother.

    NATURALLY….I say again. Mind those itchy fingers!
