In-tune(s) with the toddler

Mummee once sang the line, “Raindrops keep falling on my head….” & then forgot the rest of the lines. I laughed, & then thought Oops, I can’t recall them either...

But that was enough for Caitlin. Maybe it was the simple concept of allowing raindrops falling on (one’s) head that captivated her; when we’ve been telling her (mostly indirectly) not to be caught in the rain without an umbrella. Why are Mummee & Daddee singing about something they have adamently prohibited from happening to me?

Whatever it was, it’s now her favourite song; even if it’s only that one line. It’s new, it’s catchy, it’s rebellious I mean, like it’s getting caught in the rain it’s something Daddee says not to do it’s going out with no umbrella!

Initially I wasn’t sure if she’s inherited the tone deaf gene, but glad to say that she’s improved a lot- I can tell which tune she is humming or adlib-ing to with her own words or substitutes. Ee-ya ee-ya oh, and a Daddee here and a Daddee there, Daddee here Daddee there…

So she now knows a few tunes; her ABC’s, a jingle from her playbook, Hey Jo Jo whaddya say, we all wanna know what you learned today…and that “Doe A Dear” one too…

I gotta go Google the complete Raindrops lyrics now, so that this Daddee can stay hip & sing along to the “latest” songs she knows…

laterz..

Kids gravitate towards music naturally. This is how Max watches TV: When there’s music and singing you’ll find him wanting to craw into the TV; otherwise, he’s busy playing with his toys or looking at a book. When there’s music again, he’ll look up and run towards the TV.

You are right about what we say in front of them! She picked up the lyrics so quickly!

She also surprised me one wee-hour morning when she needed to pee, by asking me “I have to pang sai” which in our Hokkien dialect means to poop. Surprised because I don’t speak Hokkien to her, & that it was my mum who said it to her, & only once!

Caitlin actually gets off the chair / floor when her fave jingle comes on, & bobs on the spot! Drops whatever she was doing, especially when she knows it will be coming on (eg, at the end of a trailer she’s watched before) even if it was just for under 10 seconds!

It’s just to cute / funnee!
